de Chantal Choristers

WHY BECOME A CHORISTER?

AN UNPARALLELED MUSICAL EDUCATION
Using the Voice for Life curriculum developed by the Royal School of Church Music, part of an international, ecumenical organization dedicated to promoting effective and inspiring music-making in worship and in the wider community, choristers will receive advanced training in sight-reading, music theory, and vocal technique in preparation for earning ribbons and medals that mark their musical growth and their commitment to the program. Future opportunities for private piano and voice lessons may become available, as well.

LIFE SKILLS
Participation in the de Chantal Choristers can be a transformative experience for youth of all backgrounds. It combines the strength of community, the beauty of art, and the transcendence of faith into one program that teaches the core values of Christian responsibility and encourages our youth to strive for excellence. Choristers will develop self-esteem, communication skills, teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, and faith formation.

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES AND LASTING FRIENDSHIPS
From participating in optional summer music camps to learning a solo for Mass, choristers take their invaluable experiences with them forever. Additionally, the chorister community fosters deep relationships through a unique common mission, prayer, and mutual respect and support.

INSTRUCTION IN THE FAITH
As an interdisciplinary ministry, choristers will not only be instructed in concepts of music education, but also in the intrinsic role that music plays within the liturgical experience. Choristers will learn to respect and to appreciate the Church’s liturgy and the Music that they contribute to the sanctity of the Holy Mass.

REQUIREMENTS
Participation in the de Chantal Choristers represents a significant investment of time on the part of our choristers and their families. Regular attendance at weekly rehearsals and bi-weekly liturgies is essential to their growth. The de Chantal Choristers is not to be misinterpreted as an “after school activity”. Participating children and their families will be expected to participate and engage fully in rehearsals, be willing to develop their knowledge and understanding of music, and be present at all scheduled liturgies.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE
Like any school sport, participation in the de Chantal Choristers requires a significant commitment of time. The choristers maintain the following schedule from September through May.
Rehearsal: Wednesdays 4:30pm – 5:15
Worship: 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 12noon (11:30 warm-up)

COSTS
A modest yearly donation of $25 is requested per child to cover the costs for theory workbooks and musical materials. The Parish is able to subsidize this fee for families in need.
